Quesos Corcuera Wins Two Top Awards for Aged Manchego Cheese

Quesos Corcuera, Spanish Manchego producer, celebrated two important wins in national Manchego competitions this spring. Firstly, they received a gold medal in the cheese competition at the 2016 Feria Nacional del Campo conference in Manzanares, Spain. Their six month aged Manchego won the top award over 45 different Manchego cheeses from 26 different cheesemakers. They also won a silver medal for the same cheese at the prestigious Gran Selección competition celebrating the food and wine of Castilla-La Mancha. Their six month Manchego is available in the U.S. under the brand name “El Trigal®,” imported by Forever Cheese.

These awards are just two of many that Quesos Corcuera has won over the years, both in Spain and internationally. The company is recognized as one of the five most important producers of Manchego. The Corcuera family has over 70 years of experience making Manchego, starting with Don Eusebio Corcuera Gomez, who founded Quesos Corcuera out of his house in La Puebla de Montalban, in the province of Toledo. He was succeeded by his sons Ramon and Carlos and later his daughter Carmen, with the third generation in line to take over. The family was instrumental in helping to create the Manchego DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) and they became the first to produce and sell DOP Manchego.

Michele Buster, cofounder of importer Forever Cheese, found Carlos and together they worked hard to promote Manchego in the U.S. Their efforts helped to bring Manchego to the forefront of Americans’ minds and palates, establishing its position as one of the most popular Spanish cheeses today. Quesos Corcuera sets themselves apart from other producers by using the most up to date technology in the industry. Carlos devoted himself to automating the company’s production, ensuring not only top quality, but impeccable consistency and product guarantee. The technology employed ensures safety and embraces and improves tradition.

Queso Manchego DOP is a Spanish pressed sheep’s milk cheese aged a minimum of 60 days and a maximum of two years. It must be made from Manchega sheep’s milk in the province of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, or Toledo in Castilla-La Mancha. An authentic wheel of Manchego can be identified by the numbered DOP logo on the label or the numbered casein plaque on the bottom of the wheel. The cheese is firm and compact with lots of butterfat and a savory flavor that grows more intense over time. The six month aged Manchego from Quesos Corcuera is complex, full flavored, and buttery. It can be found at many cheese and specialty shops throughout the U.S.
